Jingle Bells ... The Aussie Way !!

(Sung to the tune of "Jingle Bells" !!)

Dashing through the bush
In a rusty Holden Ute
Kicking up the dust
Esky in the boot
Kelpie by my side
Singing Christmas songs
It's summer time and I am in
My singlet, shorts & thongs

CHORUS:
OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
JINGLE ALL THE WAY
CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA
ON A SCORCHING SUMMER'S DAY
JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT
OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE
IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE

Engine's getting hot
Dodge the kangaroos
Swaggy climbs aboard
He is welcome too
All the family is there
Sitting by the pool
Christmas day, the Aussie way
By the barbecue!

CHORUS

Come the afternoon
Grandpa has a doze
The kids and uncle Bruce
Are swimming in their clothes
The time comes round to go
We take a family snap
Then pack the car and all shoot through
Before the washing up

CHORUS

OK, Some definitions ...

Ute = abbreviation of "utility", a version of a "pick up truck".
Esky = a portable cooler to keep your drink and food cool.
Kelpie = an Australian breed of dog.
Thongs = flip-flops (you wear them on your feet!).
Swaggie = an abbreviation of Swagman. These were men who during the depression tramped the country side with their few possession in a swag on their back.
Shoot through = leave suddenly

Ha, ha, ha you should hear me ! That's absolutely great ! I have to sing it here then they will be even more convinced that I am crazy. Anyway I copied it from your blog I am sure nobody has ever heard it. Isn't blogging great ? You learn such a lot of things and see so many different houses, gardens and homes not to talk about the weather changes from one blog to the other ! I just came from -5° and snow and here I am sweating lol ! Fortunately I don't have to dress and undress all the time !

I loved it, and thanks for the explanations of the slang words, I've added them into my ever expanding mind dictionary of Australian terms.

Hi Meow, I posted this last Christmas and believe it or not got a query about Singlets,
so for anyone who reads the comments it's a sleeveless undershirt.
Have a good week, going by our news the fires are nearly all under control, hope that's right.

What a great song (and thanks for the translations, I needed them... but we do call flip-flops "Thongs". Or we DID, until the underwear came out by that name.)

LOVE IT!! LOL I just love fun Christmas songs!

It's not as warm here as in Australia, but Florida is quite similar. No snow, usually sunny & warm. Took a bit to get used to, from CT weather!

Thanks for the fun! D :)

Meow ~ If I hadn't been to Australia, this would have been way too esoteric for me, but I actually KNOW what a Holden is! Hurray for me! I just wanted to wish a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family! ~ jb///

I LOVE this one. Funnily enough, a good friend sent me the e-card version of this song today and I like it so much (mostly for it's Aussie dagginess). It cracks me up and horrifys my Swedish husband :) Take a squizz here and turn up your speakers!

Hi Meow,

Just catching up on all your posts. Gee, I go away for the weekend and I have a bunch of posts to read. :)

Good to see you having time to post and be silly again. Thanks for the song and animal lesson.

Gattina ... I can just picture you dancing around singing this one !!! Hope you are well.

Silverneurotic ... nothing wrong with expanding one's vocabulary !!!

Peter ... it's funny how we are so used to certain words, it's hard to think that everyone doesn't understand them !!

Saur ... oh, I didn't know you called flip-flops thongs, also. Well, there you go, I'm learning, too !! Thanks.

Feline Frisky ... I always thought Florida had similar weather to what we have ... does it get as hot, though ??

Pea ... thank you. Likewise, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

LZ Blogger ... oooh, I didn't think about the Holden definitions ... it's just a brand of car ... thanks !! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too.

Marie ... hahahaha ... we Aussies are dags, aren't we !!! Glad you enjoyed it !!

Brian ... thanks so much. It is great to have time to post and play again ... it was a long time coming !!!

Take care, all, and have a great week ... Meow

Michelle ... *giggle* ... 12 possums on your roof, what a racket they'd make ! Wow, avocados and bananas ... I only have the typical lemons,a wonderful apricot tree and a blood-orange tree ... nothing quite so tropical as yours !!
Take care, Meow

I just for the life of me cannot imagine Christmas in the middle of Summer. I am sure though that you could not picture it being cold, windy and just overcast...

Greetings.

If I keep reading your blog, Ms. Meow, I may eventually learn to speak Aussie. Now, if you could just teach me to speak “meow” language to that I can communicate with the cat who owns and misuses me, life would be perfect.

I may live north of the equator, but I happen to live in a sub-tropical latitude! 25 degrees north to be exact. The Tropic of Cancer is 23.5 degrees north. What this means is that if Miami FL were just 1.5 degrees, or 90 nautical miles*, south I would be in the tropical zone proper.

What this means in so many words or less is that Christmas time for me is not "white". It is not exactly hot, but by no means is it cold. So I can BBQ on Christmas Day too if I want! It is great. There is no summer or winter, there is hurricane season and "nice time to live here" season.

* 1 nautical mile = 1.15 USA land mile. Nautical miles ARE a metric unit. 1 degree of latitude OR 1 degree longitude at the equator is equal to 60 nautical miles. One minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile.

And yes, Florida gets hot. The heat gets to oppressive levels. It gets so darn humid that you go insane. Your sweat can not cool you, because it can not evaporate. But there is no evidence of climate change! So lets keep those carbon emissions up!

You have a lot of Florida readers by the way.

Ciscokid ... we do have cool weather over Summer, but generally it is warm !!

Nick ... hmmmm, I think even if you did know "meow" language, Alex would still rule the roost !!

Lazy Iguana ... sounds like us Aussies would feel right at home in Florida !!! Thanks for the info.

Take care, Meow
